One sunny Thursday in January 1958 I was walking back to school after lunch when there was an explosion in the sky. Everyone stopped and stared upwards to see wreckage slowly falling from two RAF aeroplanes that had collided high above Colwick Woods, killing both pilots. Some of the wreckage crashed onto Colwick racecourse and some onto a furniture factory at Colwick, but none hit the school. We were very subdued that afternoon and the headmaster, Mr Chambers, held a special assembly to tell us what had happened.
